Buddha Basketball 3-Pointer is an augmented reality (AR) sculpture modeled after a found porcelain Buddha and a plush basketball topy sourced at Rcology in 2023 during my artist-in-residency program. This placed base piece was part of Ex:Fields art walking tour and located in various basketball courts in San Francisco. The Buddha Basketball is monumentally large, making the stark contrast between the fine porcelain Buddha and the playful plush basketball toy even more apparent. The combination of the two contrasting objects becomes a homage to stuff and the practice of collecting and saving as a means of survival, a cultural practice often found in intergenerational, migrant families. Transforming the Basketball Buddha into an AR digital object, he now becomes immortal, no longer vulnerable to breakable porcelain, making the Basketball Buddha last forever.
